CCA - International Volunteer Opportunity


Credit Union Development Officer in Colombo, Sri Lanka
 
WHERE:   Colombo, Sri Lanka and surrounding rural areas

This is a voluntary assignment. Domestic and international airfare, ground transport, visa, travel insurance, out of country accommodation, and a monthly meal/incidental allowance will be covered by CCA as per CCA guidelines.

SANASA Development Bank & The SANASA Movement  (www.sdb.lk)

The SANASA Movement is the leading collective of community-based organizations in Sri Lanka with a network of 8,400 primary thrift and credit societies in rural and urban districts across the country; a group of companies providing services to the primary societies and the Sri Lankan public; and a national federation.  SANASA encourages its approximately one million members (17% of Sri Lanka's population) to "establish a new social order based on co-operative principles and values".  The Canadian Co-operative Association has been working with the SANASA movement for more than 20 years, and is currently implementing the, "Rebuilding and Strengthening Livelihoods in Post-Tsunami Sri Lanka" project focused on micro-finance and on building / re-building livelihoods.

The Project:
The successful candidate will be placed with the technical support unit of the SANASA Development Bank (SDBL) in Colombo.  The bank is currently developing a number of training modules on micro finance. The training itself, however, will take place primarily at the women's college at the SANASA campus in Kegalle. The placement involves travel to Kegalle as well as to individual primary societies.  The volunteer will have the opportunity to work with and empower the SANASA members and communities in the area.


Your Role as CCA Volunteer:

Under the supervision of the Director of International Relations Division, the successful volunteer will implement the following activities:

  • Work as an integral part of the Technical Support Unit to develop and implement training for primary societies;

  • Improve and develop the project training handouts together with trainers according to needs of primary societies;

  • Work on the consistency and integration of training materials from various sources to ensure a unified and adapted training  curriculum;

  • Conduct training of trainer sessions to improve facilitation skills of subject experts;

  • Work onsite with primary societies requiring assistance in the areas of finance, management or government reporting and data collection; and

  • Document best practices and lessons learned from the credit unions in Sri Lanka.

 

The qualified volunteer will have practical hands-on experience and/or educational knowledge in^:

  • Finance or business administration;

  • Familiarity with microfinance and specifically the credit union model;

  • Understanding of cooperatives or member-based business enterprises; and

  • Ability to communicate and effectively interact with people of different cultures.
